Dr. Walsh is a nationally respected military leader, educator and business executive whose career has been defined by service, leadership and a commitment to developing future generations.
A Dallas native and graduate of Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas, Dr. Walsh went on to attend the United States Naval Academy, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1977. He later completed graduate studies at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, earning both a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy and a Ph.D. He graduated first in his class and was recognized for his academic distinction and leadership throughout his career.
Over the course of 34 years in the United States Navy, Dr. Walsh rose to the rank of four-star admiral. A decorated naval aviator, he flew combat missions supporting operations including Desert Storm, Provide Comfort, Southern Watch and Deny Flight. He also served as a pilot with the Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, holding the prestigious Slot Pilot position.
Throughout his distinguished military career, Dr. Walsh led at every level of naval aviation and fleet operations. His assignments included Commander of Carrier Air Wing One, Commander of Carrier Group Seven, Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and U.S. Fifth Fleet and ultimately Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, the largest fleet command in the world. As Commander of the Pacific Fleet, he oversaw operations spanning half the globe, including more than 180 ships, 1,500 aircraft and 100,000 sailors.
While enlisted in the military, he became widely recognized for his expertise in strategic leadership, ethics and crisis management. In addition to his operational leadership, Dr. Walsh served as the 35th Vice Chief of Naval Operations, the Navy’s second-highest ranking officer. He also chaired the Department of Leadership, Ethics and Law at the U.S. Naval Academy and served as a White House Fellow under President Ronald Reagan.
One of the most defining moments of Dr. Walsh’s career took place in 2011 when he led Operation Tomodachi, the U.S. military’s humanitarian response following the devastating earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis in Japan. His leadership during this international relief effort earned widespread recognition and strengthened the longstanding alliance between the United States and Japan. For his extraordinary service and humanitarian leadership, the Japanese government awarded Dr. Walsh the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, one of the country’s highest honors. He was also presented with the Eagle on the World Award by the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, becoming the first uniformed military officer to receive this distinction in the award’s 27-year history. In recognition of his leadership and support of regional security efforts, Dr. Walsh also received the Republic of Korea’s Tong-il Medal, the nation’s highest peacetime military honor.
Following his retirement from the Navy in 2012, Dr. Walsh continued to lead in the private sector and education field. He held executive leadership roles with The Boeing Company, iSIGHT Partners and Academic Partnerships before co-founding The First Watch Group, a strategic consulting firm focused on leadership and organizational transformation.
Dr. Walsh’s leadership and contributions have earned recognition far beyond his military accomplishments. He was only the second graduate in the history of Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas to receive both the Distinguished Graduate and Distinguished Alumnus awards. Most recently, he was selected to receive the 2026 Distinguished Graduate Award from the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation in recognition of his extraordinary career and service.
In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Walsh remains involved in civic and community leadership. He serves as Chairman of the Dallas Committee on Foreign Relations and is a Senior Fellow at Southern Methodist University. His work continues to advance ethical leadership, diplomacy and global engagement. In 2022, Dr. Walsh was appointed President of Cristo Rey Dallas, where he champions educational opportunity and mission-driven leadership for young people across North Texas. His commitment to education reflects a lifelong belief in the transformative power of opportunity, mentorship and service to others. At the luncheon, Dr. Walsh will share a powerful message about the life-changing impacts of service and generosity. He will reflect on how the support and generosity of others made it possible for him to pursue his education and provided opportunities that led him to serve the nation and now continues to inspire his service to the community.
